In Colombia, summer marks an ideal season for visitors to explore the country’s incredible offerings while escaping the harsh winters of Europe and the United States. During the summer season, the preferred destinations for vacationing are often found along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, although there is also much more to discover.

Summer in Colombia: five must-visit destinations

Colombia boasts a wide variety of landscapes and climates, making it easy to find perfect destinations for every season of the year. Here are some must-visit places from which to enjoy the Colombian summer:

Cartagena

With its tropical climate and low chance of rain, Cartagena stands out as one of Colombia’s most popular summer destinations. Thousands of tourists visit every year to enjoy its sunny beaches and the refreshing breezes of the Caribbean. Popular activities include strolling through the streets of Cartagena’s historic center, visiting the Rosario and Baru Islands, and relaxing on the city’s nearby beaches.

Santa Marta

For beach and nature lovers, Santa Marta is an ideal destination. Here visitors will find treasures including the Tayrona National Natural Park, where they can enjoy jungle hikes leading to beautiful virgin beaches. Another must-do experience is the trek to Ciudad Perdida, or the Lost City, an archaeological site rich in history and mysticism. Additionally, places like El Rodadero and Minca offer a mix of relaxation, adventure, and exquisite local cuisine.

San Andres

San Andres, famous for its stunning “sea of seven colors,” is a true paradise. Popular activities for visitors include enjoying the area’s crystal-clear beaches, participating in water sports like diving and snorkeling, and visiting Johnny Cay, a small island with perfect white sand and turquoise waters. Visitors should not miss the San Andres Mangrove Natural Park, a wonderful spot to connect with local flora and fauna.

Although not located on the Caribbean coast, Medellin, known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” is also a favorite destination for tourists seeking an escape from the cold and rain of European and U.S. winters. The city’s vibrant nightlife and diverse culinary scene are irresistible. Other highlights include visiting Parque Lleras, the Botanical Garden, and Parque de los Deseos. Additionally, just a few hours from the city, Guatape invites you to explore its iconic Piedra del Peñol, a natural landmark that offers spectacular views across the area.

Eje Cafetero (Coffee Region)

Colombia’s Coffee Region combines lush landscapes, pleasant weather, and a rich coffee culture. Towns such as Salento, Filandia, and Manizales are perfect for enjoying nature and learning about the production of some of the world’s best coffee. Highlights include hiking through the Cocora Valley trails, visiting coffee farms, and relaxing in natural thermal springs.
