Colombia toppled Australia by 3 goals to 0 in the final International friendly of 2025. Late goals by captain James Rodriguez from the penalty spot, Luis Diaz and Jefferson Lerma secured the victory for la Tricolor against the Socceroos in New York.

Coach Nestor Lorenzo used the fixture to once again sharpen his core while giving minutes to players still fighting for roster spots for next summer’s tournament. Colombia arrived on an eight-match unbeaten, turned nine with the win against Australia.

Colombia was without right back Daniel Muñoz, who left the squad for personal reasons. That has opened the door for Santiago Arias, who once again had a standout performance, to start at right fullback. Colombia dominated the better part of the match, as Australia sat back and defended their box for most of the game.

Colombia’s Team that beat Australia

Colombia’s line up to face Austalia was composed of Camilo Vargas; Santiago Arias, Davinson Sanchez, Jhon Lucumi, Johan Mojica; Juan Camilo Portilla, Richard Rios; James Rodriguez, Yaser Asprilla, Luis Diaz and Luis Suarez. Gustavo puerta and Rafael Santos Borre came on from the bench.

Before the game Lorenzo signaled he would balance giving playing time to newcomers with preserving the spine of the team. Gustavo Puerta’s bright debut has put pressure on regular starters in midfield, and Richard Rios, the usual occupant of Ríos’ role, is expected to press for a return to the lineup alongside Jefferson Lerma.

James Rodriguez and Luis Diaz continued as automatic selections as Lorenzo seeks stability in attack; the No. 9 spot remains contested, but reports point to Luis Suarez starting after coming off the bench against New Zealand. The Socceroos arrived as a seasoned World Cup side that can offer Colombia a higher level of competitive intensity than the Tricolor saw against New Zealand. Australia’s recent form has been mixed, but its habitual presence at World Cups makes it a valuable barometer for Colombia’s readiness.
