Catalina Sandino Moreno and Sasha Calle have become central figures in one of the most talked-about Netflix productions at the start of the year. Both actresses, with deep Colombian roots, are part of the cast of “The Rip,” a crime thriller led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck that has drawn attention not only for its tension-filled storyline but also for the presence of Latino talent in a high-profile international project.

‘The Rip,’ Netflix’s new crime thrille

The film, released on Netflix in January 2026, is a crime thriller inspired by real events. The story is set in Miami and follows a group of police officers who discover a stash containing millions of dollars in cash. What initially seems like a lucky find quickly becomes the trigger for a spiral of mistrust, corruption, and violence.

As the story unfolds, loyalty among the officers begins to crumble. Internal suspicions, pressure from organized crime, and personal ambition lead to extreme decisions that put both their careers and their lives at risk.

Directed by Ben Affleck and produced by Artists Equity — the company he founded with Matt Damon — the film blends action, drama, and strong psychological tension. Within this atmosphere of constant pressure, the characters portrayed by Colombian actresses Catalina Sandino Moreno and Sasha Calle bring key emotional and narrative layers to the development of the conflict.

Two Colombian actresses at the heart of the story

Sandino Moreno’s presence in “The Rip” marks a new chapter in the career of an actress who has spent more than two decades building a solid path in international cinema. Born in Bogota, she became the first Colombian to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2005 for Maria Full of Grace, a role that also earned her the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

In this new production, she plays detective Marisol Reyes, a Miami police officer torn between loyalty to her colleagues and the pressure of internal corruption that begins to infiltrate the force. Her character embodies the film’s moral conflict: The struggle between doing what is right and giving in to a system tainted by easy money. Sandino Moreno’s experience in emotionally intense roles aligns with the story’s intensity and adds depth to a figure caught in high-stakes decisions.

Meanwhile, Sasha Calle represents a newer generation of performers with Colombian roots who are gaining ground in Hollywood. Born in the United States to a Colombian mother, she spent part of her childhood in Antioquia, maintaining a close cultural connection to Colombia. Her rise to fame came with her role as Supergirl in The Flash (2023), making her the first Latina actress to portray the iconic character.

In “The Rip,” Calle plays Isabel Torres, a young rookie officer who becomes a key figure in the story after discovering the true scale of the hidden money and the betrayals within the group of police officers. Her character offers a fresh perspective within a corrupted structure, and it is through her findings that secrets emerge and shift the direction of the plot. This role solidifies her transition from superhero universes to more realistic stories filled with moral tension and human dilemmas.
