US President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro have seemingly put aside their differences and completed an amicable official meeting on Tuesday, February 3. with Trump writting, “Gustavo, a great honor. I love Colombia,” in a commemorative picture they took together.

After months of trading jabs, including the US revoking President Petro’s Visa and adding him to the Clinton list, President Trump also signed a copy of his book ‘The Art of the Deal’ for the Colombian head of state, telling Petro, “You are great”.

Local accounts have also described the meeting as very successful and productive. El Tiempo has reported that President Trump seemingly believed Petro when he explained that Colombian farmers are the victims of drug trafficking and should not be punished. Instead, both countries should go after international drug lords and cartel structures. Trump reportedly said, “We will go after them with everything.”

In the first official interview after his meeting with President Trump, Petro revealed that he asked the US President to help mediate the current crisis between Colombia and Ecuador. He proposed a “Triple Alliance” between Colombia, the United States, and Ecuador to fightdrug trafficking.

Additionally, the President revealed that he did not discuss his inclusion in the Clinton list “for a single minute” and instead touched upon topics that have proven to be divisive between the pair, such as energy.

Petro explained to Trump how clean energy can reactivate Venezuela’s economy, and simultaneously help eradicate Coca leaf plantations in Colombia’s Catatumbo. US President Donald Trump also recognized the meeting was good, saying, “We had a good meeting, I thought he was great.”
