A state-of-the-art rail profiling machine, essential for the maintenance of the Medellin Metro tracks, entered Colombia through Puerto Antioquia, in the Uraba region, in a complex logistical and customs operation. The equipment, coming from Italy, had a cost exceeding 6 million dollars and is designed to optimize the operating conditions of the railway system.
The arrival of the modern machine comes at an important moment for the Medellin Metro, as it prepares for an increase in user demand and the entry into operation of new trains in the coming months. With this equipment, the aim is to improve maintenance and ensure a more efficient and safer service for passengers, who see this transport system as a symbol of Medellin and a source of pride.
Work of the Mayor’s Office of Medellin and the Government of Antioquia
“Good news for Medellin, Antioquia and Colombia. With great joy I tell you that it has arrived at Puerto Antioquia, which is already in itself a symbol of development, the new railway profiler for our @metrodemedellin,” wrote on the social network X the mayor of the capital of Antioquia, Federico Gutierrez. “A key machine for the maintenance of the railway track and to prepare for what is coming: the entry into operation of the 39 new railcars that are already being assembled.”
The local leader also highlighted that it is an investment by the Mayor’s Office of Medellin and the Government of Antioquia. “More capacity, more efficiency and better service for more than one million people who use the system daily,” added Gutierrez. “In the regions, it is about moving from words to actions. Together we will continue promoting the progress of Colombia.”
For its part, the Medellin Metro spoke on the same social network: “The mobility of our city-region continues to move forward. Today we received in our workshops the new rail profiling machine, the largest auxiliary vehicle of the Metro, which arrived for the first time directly in Antioquia. A 37-meter, 130-ton team, manufactured under European standards, which will allow us to continue taking care of every detail of our railway line.”
And it explained that, with more trains in operation, the metro’s commitment to maintenance and safety also grows. “This machine restores the ideal rail profile, reduces vibrations and optimizes wheel–rail contact, guaranteeing more comfortable and safer journeys,” it specified.
Operation generated millionaire tax revenues
For its part, the National Directorate of Taxes and Customs (DIAN) confirmed the arrival and nationalization of the specialized machinery, in the midst of a process that also generated millionaire income for the country. The operation, in addition to representing an advance in infrastructure, produces a positive impact on public finances, as it generated VAT revenue exceeding 4,296 million pesos (US$1,189,999).
According to DIAN, the process was carried out with customs support, guaranteeing that the entry of the equipment complied with all requirements. In addition to the benefit for the transport system, DIAN highlighted the strategic role of Puerto Antioquia as a new key point for Colombian foreign trade.
The operation reinforces the importance of this infrastructure in the country’s logistical connection, facilitating the import of large and high-value equipment. This type of movement shows how customs operations are not only related to fiscal control, but also to the development of key projects for the country.
