The U.S. Department of State announced it will issue a limited-edition commemorative passport to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary with the image of Donald Trump on its interior pages, making him the first living president to appear on an official U.S. credential.
The government will make between 25,000 and 30,000 units available during the national commemoration period, following months of technical review and design evaluation that led to final authorization this week.
The design centers on a main section featuring Trump’s engraved portrait. The interior pages display his signature in gold ink alongside text from the Declaration of Independence.
A break with tradition in official documents
Historically, the U.S. government has kept living political figures off national currency and identity documents. For the 250th anniversary, however, officials incorporated this new imagery into the traditional format, producing a model unlike anything the State Department has previously issued.
While earlier passports featured neutral landscapes or deceased leaders, this version focuses on the sitting president. The manufacturing process nonetheless complies with current government security regulations.
State Department defends the design
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott explained that, as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in July, the department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed passports to mark the occasion. Pigott added that the passport will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security standards that make the U.S. passport one of the most secure documents in the world.
Several sectors questioned whether the measure politicizes a document that has historically projected a neutral image for all citizens. In response, the State Department clarified that citizens who prefer the traditional option can still request the standard blue booklet. Obtaining the commemorative model is entirely voluntary.
How and when to get the commemorative passport
The State Department will soon announce the official process for interested citizens to acquire these collector’s editions. Given the limited supply, the agency expects high demand at launch, and the document will be available only while stocks last.
In addition to Trump’s portrait and historical engravings, the passport includes exclusive artistic elements. The initiative is part of a broader series of official announcements connected to the 250th anniversary celebrations.
Standard fees for domestic applications
The federal agency confirmed that it will not charge any additional fees for issuing this commemorative design compared to the standard passport. These fees are the same throughout the United States for any citizen applying for the document. The current prices for the various identification services are as follows:
- Adult passport book (renewal): US$130.
- Adult passport book (first-time): US$165.
- Passport book for children under 16: US$135.
- Adult passport card: US$30.
- Combined passport book and card package for adults: US$160.
- Expedited service for priority processing: additional US$60.
The total cost of passports for new applicants includes a mandatory acceptance fee of US$35. This amount is paid directly to the authorized facility, such as post offices or judicial secretariats, for the identity verification service. Because external staff must validate the original documents and administer the oath, this payment is separate from the federal processing fee.
