Colombian singer Karol G made history once again in the music industry after becoming the first Latina artist to receive the International Artist Excellence Award during the American Music Awards 2026. The ceremony, held in Las Vegas, brought together some of the biggest names in entertainment and featured a strong Colombian presence.
The award, presented by John Legend, places the Colombian star among a historic list of artists who have received the distinction, including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé. With this achievement, Karol G continues to strengthen her global impact and the international growth of Latin music.
In addition to the honorary recognition, the artist also won the award for Best Latin Album thanks to Tropicoqueta, a project released in 2025 that debuted at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart and reached number three on the Billboard 200. The album has been considered one of the most successful Latin records of the past year and has further elevated the singer’s international profile.
Karol G: One of the biggest stars of the 2026 AMAs
One of the most talked-about moments of the night was Karol G’s live performance of “Ivonny Bonita.” The artist appeared on stage with an ethereal aesthetic, surrounded by a set design featuring a translucent curtain and white flakes falling across the stage. Her silver outfit and solo choreography complemented a performance that received widespread applause from the audience.
During her acceptance speech, the Colombian singer spoke about the meaning music has in her life and the connection she has built with fans around the world.
“This career has given me the most important thing in my life: purpose. I can say things in my songs that become a voice for many people, a place of healing and safety. I believe my life has meaning because of my music,” the singer said emotionally before the audience.
Karol G closed her speech in Spanish by thanking her fans: “To all my fans around the world: I love you so much. Thank you.”
The recognition comes at one of the most important moments of her career. In April 2026, the artist also made history by becoming the first Latina to headline Coachella 2026, an achievement many consider key to the recognition she has now received at the AMAs.
