The Paramillo del Quindio is a mountain that rises to 4,750 meters above sea level and stands out for its striking colors, reminiscent of a rainbow. These hues are the result of the mineral composition of the soil, eroded over time, creating a unique visual spectacle in the region. Formerly known as the Nevado del Quindío, this peak has lost its glacier due to climate change, yet it remains an unmissable destination for nature and hiking enthusiasts.

How to get to the mountain of seven colors

To visit the Mountain of 7 Colors from Cali, travelers must first reach the Cocora Valley in the Quindio department. This journey can be made by bus or private vehicle to the town of Salento, where transportation is available to the Cocora Valley. From there, the trek to the Paramillo del Quindio begins—a hike that can take between two and three days, depending on one’s pace and acclimatization time.

Activities to do on the mountain

Travelers who venture to this mountain can enjoy a variety of activities, including:

High-altitude hiking: The trek to the Paramillo del Quindio is challenging but rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.
Wildlife and flora observation: Along the route, visitors can spot endemic species of the Colombian Andes, such as the paramo hummingbird and frailejones, characteristic plants of the high-mountain ecosystem.
Landscape photography: The combination of the soil’s colors with the clear sky and surrounding mountains creates unforgettable postcard-worthy views.
Camping under the stars: For the more adventurous, camping along the route offers an intimate connection with nature.

Since the ascent to the Paramillo del Quindio is demanding, proper preparation is essential. It is recommended to bring warm clothing, trekking shoes, sufficient water, and high-energy food. Additionally, acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness, and if possible, it is advisable to hike with an experienced guide.
