Viche is an ancestral drink originating from Colombia’s Pacific region, traditionally crafted by the Afro-descendant communities of the area. Considered an elixir with medicinal and spiritual properties, viche is much more than just an alcoholic beverage; it represents the history, resilience, and cultural identity of the coastal peoples.

Origins of Viche drink in Colombia

This beverage has its roots in African traditions brought over by enslaved people during the colonial period. In Colombia’s Pacific region, Afro-descendant communities adopted and adapted these techniques, incorporating native ingredients to create a drink with profound cultural and social significance. For centuries, viche has been made and passed down by the vicheras, women skilled in the art of distillation, who have kept this tradition alive across generations.

Traditionally, viche is not only a celebratory drink but is also used in folk medicine to relieve ailments, strengthen the body, and even in spiritual rituals. In many communities, it is considered an essential element in the transition to adulthood and in welcoming newborns, as well as a symbol of connection with ancestors.

How Viche is made?

Viche is a sugarcane distillate handcrafted through a process that begins with the fermentation of guarapo, the sugarcane juice. It then undergoes a rudimentary distillation process in homemade stills, resulting in a strong, pure liquor with an alcohol content that can exceed 30%.

From the base viche, other variations can be prepared with medicinal and aromatic ingredients, such as viche curado, which includes herbs and spices to enhance its therapeutic properties, or arrechón, a version made with honey, cinnamon, borojo, and other aphrodisiac fruits.

How Viche is consumed?

Viche can be enjoyed on its own or used as a base for cocktails and traditional regional drinks. Traditionally, it is sipped in small amounts to appreciate its strong and deep flavor. In some contexts, it is served warm and sweetened with panela or honey, especially when used for medicinal purposes.

Festivities and social gatherings on Colombia’s Pacific coast are often accompanied by viche, either as an offering to ancestors or as a symbol of brotherhood. In recent years, the drink has gained recognition both nationally and internationally, leading to initiatives aimed at protecting its artisanal production and promoting its responsible consumption. Additionally, in 2021, viche was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Colombia.
