A study led by historian Richard Bulliet from Columbia University sheds new light on how the wheel might have first been created.

Working with engineers Lee Alacoque from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Kai James from Georgia Tech, the research team believes that ancient copper miners in Europe’s Carpathian Mountains were the first to create wheeled devices.

Their findings suggest these early wheels were likely used to move heavy materials like ore, changing the traditional view that ties the invention of the wheel to pottery wheels in Mesopotamia around 4000 BCE.

Ancient miners’ innovations led to early wheel designs

The team investigated how miners in tight, narrow tunnels likely adapted simple tools to create the first wheel-like devices. Using logs as basic rollers, these miners found ways to make transporting heavy loads easier.

Over time, they refined these tools, gradually turning basic rolling logs into early versions of wheels with axles. This adaptation would have been especially useful in cramped mining paths, where space was limited and maneuverability was essential.

Their findings show that the environment of the mines was critical in driving this innovation. Miners faced challenging paths that encouraged them to improve their basic methods. As a result, they developed wheels and axles that made moving ore much easier, evolving these tools over time to meet practical needs in the mines.

Key stages in wheel development

The study outlines three main stages in the evolution of the wheel. First, miners modified basic wooden rollers by adding grooves, which helped keep boxes full of ore stable as they transported them. This change was practical because it allowed workers to avoid constant adjustments.

Next, miners made the ends of these grooved rollers wider, creating a type of axle that could support one or two wheels. This was a major step forward because it introduced a stable way to keep loads balanced on uneven ground.

Finally, after centuries of small improvements, miners attached wheels independently to axles, greatly increasing control and flexibility for navigating rocky paths in the mines.

Researchers estimate this gradual evolution took about 500 years, showing how early engineering improved slowly over time. This timeline counters the idea that inventions like the wheel appear suddenly, instead highlighting how invention often grows from practical problem-solving and adaptation.
