The Flor de la Mar is one of the most valuable shipwrecks in history. In 1511, the Flor de la Mar played a pivotal role in the Portuguese conquest of Malacca, a prosperous trading hub on the Malay Peninsula.
Commanded by Afonso de Albuquerque, the ship was loaded with immense wealth seized from the Sultan of Malacca.
Historical records describe the cargo as including gold, silver, precious gems, and rare artifacts — treasures so valuable they were intended as a personal gift for King Manuel I of Portugal.
Not long after the conquest, Albuquerque set sail for Portugal, but the ship would never complete its journey. While navigating the perilous Strait of Malacca, the Flor de la Mar was caught in a violent storm.
The ship shattered and sank, along with hundreds of crew members and the priceless treasure. Albuquerque survived the wreck by clinging to a raft.
