French carmaker Renault announced the production of its new model, the Renault Kwid, in Colombia, making it the company’s 18th vehicle produced in the country. Sales of the new model are expected to kick off in the next two months.

At the launch event, Ariel Montenegro, head of the Renault-SOFAS, the Colombian company that assembles the manufacturer’s cars in the country, baptized the Kwid as the new “faithful friend,” as a homage to the historical significance of the Renault 4 model for Colombia.

Renault Kwid production in Colombia to generate at least 700 jobs

Montenegro explained that the production of Renault’s new Kwid model is expected to generate at least 700 direct jobs in Colombia. He also said that the production of the new vehicle is a great chance for the brand to strengthen its market in the country.

Besides being prominent in Colombia’s car market, the Renault Kwid will also reach the Mexican, Ecuador car markets. Crucially, Montenegro explained that Renault Sofasa will keep working to make further assembling projects in Colombia, to raise car production in the country.

Right now, however, the company’s main priority is educating the workforce, and it aims to produce 200 cars every day.

At the event, Renault paid homage to its legendary Renault 4 model

The Renault 4 was the first car to be massively owned by Colombian families. It has been playfully dubbed the “faithful friend,” and now, Montenegro has called the Kwid the new version of the Renault 4.

Montenegro remembered the legacy of the R4, saying, “That DNA is in the Kwid. Many remember their first love, and this is the first love for many.”

He added, “The Kwid will be fuel-efficient, has a very spacious trunk—the largest in its category. With a gallon of regular fuel, it covers approximately 67 kilometers, much more efficient than some hybrids on the market, thanks to its power-to-weight ratio and optimized transmission.”
