As we are just a few months away from the presidential elections, it is important to remind Colombian citizens residing abroad that they have until March 31 to register their ID to vote. Whether you are Colombians temporarily staying abroad or have permanently put down roots in another country, it is important to remind that you have the possibility to vote in the Colombian elections.
As recalled by the consular authorities, only those who have registered their ID to participate in the 2026 electoral process may vote. The presidential elections are first preceded by the legislative elections, to elect the members of Congress, scheduled in less than a month, on Sunday, March 8. Unfortunately, if you failed to register your ID for these elections, the deadline to register and vote in these elections has already closed.
Nevertheless, there is still time to undertake the necessary steps to register your ID to elect the new president and vice president. You have until March 31 to do so by going to a Colombian Consulate.
As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls, registering your ID to vote is different from consular registration. By registering your ID, you will be able to exercise your right to vote at the polling station where you have completed that registration.
Please note that at Colombian consulates, as a Colombian citizen living abroad, you may vote in advance: from March 2 to 7 for the congressional elections, and from March 25 to 30 for the presidential elections. In all cases, you must present your ID.
