The detention of Colombian journalist Estefany Rodríguez by agents of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has raised concern among press organizations and migrant communities in that country.
The reporter, known for her work covering issues affecting the Latino population in Nashville, was arrested under circumstances that have raised questions about the immigration process she was facing and about the conditions of her capture.
Rodríguez worked as a reporter for the local outlet Nashville Noticias and collaborated with Univision 42, two news platforms aimed primarily at the Hispanic community in the state of Tennessee. Her detention occurred while she was inside a vehicle identified as belonging to a media outlet, which has intensified debate about the impact the case could have on journalistic coverage of immigration issues in the United States.
The journalist was detained last Wednesday, March 4, in the city of Nashville, capital of the state of Tennessee, by ICE agents, the federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws in the country.

According to initial reports, Rodríguez was intercepted by federal agents while she was near a gym in the southern part of the city. Witnesses said several vehicles surrounded the car she was traveling in, a vehicle identified with the logo of a media outlet.
The journalist was accompanied by her husband, a U.S. citizen, when the agents proceeded to detain her. After the procedure, she was initially transferred to an immigration detention center, where she remains in custody while her legal situation is reviewed.
The scene caused concern among colleagues and members of Nashville’s Latino community, especially because Rodríguez was known for her frequent coverage of immigration enforcement operations and issues related to immigration policy in the region.
Authorities have not publicly released all the details of the procedure. However, preliminary reports indicate that the detention occurred as part of an ongoing immigration process. According to information known after the arrest, the journalist entered the United States in March 2021 with a tourist visa and later applied for political asylum.
Her legal team maintains that Rodríguez left Colombia after receiving threats related to her journalistic work. According to her attorney, there are records of intimidating messages and complaints filed before she left the country, which prompted her request for international protection on U.S. soil.
The defense also indicated that, at the time of the detention, there was no arrest warrant against her. For this reason, the lawyers filed a petition before a federal court requesting an immediate review of the legality of the measure.
At the same time, accounts attributed to immigration authorities indicate that the journalist allegedly missed two appointments related to her immigration process, which led authorities to consider her a potential flight risk. The case is now under review while it is determined whether her detention complies with the legal procedures established by the U.S. immigration system.
Journalistic career
Estefany Rodríguez has developed much of her reporting work in Nashville, a city with a growing Latino population. Since 2022 she has been part of the team at Nashville Noticias, a digital outlet that produces Spanish-language content about local current affairs, security, health, and migration.
Through field reporting and interviews, the journalist has focused on informing the public about issues that directly affect the Hispanic community, particularly matters related to immigration policies and federal enforcement operations.
In addition to her work with that news portal, she has also collaborated with Univision 42 Nashville, a station affiliated with the Univision network that broadcasts Spanish-language news for the city’s metropolitan area.
Before moving to the United States, Rodríguez worked as a journalist in Colombia. She is a graduate of the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe and worked in different media outlets before migrating. Her professional experience and her focus on migration issues made her a recognized figure within Nashville’s Latino community.
Reactions and concern in the community
The detention has sparked reactions among colleagues and organizations linked to the defense of press freedom and migrant rights. Several journalists and activists have pointed out that the case raises concern, especially because it involves a reporter who covered issues related to immigration policies.
On social media and in community spaces, several people have expressed their support for the journalist and have called for clarity about the process she faces. The outlet Nashville Noticias also spoke out about the case and confirmed that Rodríguez was detained while traveling in a vehicle identified with the organization’s logo.
As the process continues, attention is now focused on the judicial decisions that will determine the journalist’s immigration future. Her defense, led by attorney Joel Coxander, seeks to have a court evaluate whether the detention complied with the law and whether there are sufficient grounds to keep her in custody.
The case adds to a broader context of debate in the United States over immigration policies and their impact on foreign communities, including media professionals who report on these issues.
