Colombia shone at the ice skating world championship held in Utah, United States, from March 6 to March 8. The Colombian delegation won 11 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 9 bronze medals, delivering an outstanding performance for the country in this discipline. The championship took place at the Utah Olympic Oval, located in Salt Lake City, and brought together skaters from different countries competing in ice skating speed events.
The Colombian team was made up of 17 skaters, 10 of whom are world champions in roller speed skating, who are currently part of the transition process to ice skating. This sports project aims to take advantage of Colombia’s experience in speed skating to compete in international winter sports competitions.
Among the standout athletes of the championship was Angelo Verdugo, representing the Santander Skating League. He established himself as one of the main protagonists of the tournament after winning three gold medals and one silver medal, becoming one of the leaders of Colombia’s medal count.

The overall results of the championship produced a medal table dominated by several Colombian regional leagues that have contributed to the development of speed skating. The department of Santander led the ranking with four gold medals and three silver medals, largely driven by the performance of Angelo Verdugo and other athletes from the region.
Second place went to Caldas, which secured three gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals. Within this delegation, skater Pablo Felipe Marin stood out after winning two gold medals, playing a decisive role in his department’s overall performance in the championship.
Third place in the medal standings went to Bogota, with two gold medals, two silver medals, and three bronze medals, while Valle del Cauca finished fourth with two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. Further down the ranking were Antioquia, with two silver medals and one bronze, and Cundinamarca, which earned one silver medal and one bronze medal.
The fact that Colombia shone in the ice skating world championship in Utah reflects the regional diversity of Colombian skating, a sport that has strong talent development programs across different parts of the country.
Athletes who stood out in the championship
In addition to Verdugo’s leadership, another of the tournament’s key figures was Kollin Andrea Castro Mosquera, representing the Valle del Cauca Skating League. The young skater finished her participation with two gold medals and two silver medals, confirming her status as one of the most promising athletes in Colombian skating.
Castro had already made a name for herself in roller speed skating by winning important international titles before transitioning to ice. Her rapid adaptation to this discipline has allowed her to compete at a high level against rivals with more experience on ice tracks.
The delegation also earned medals thanks to the performances of other Colombian athletes. Karen Siatama won silver and bronze medals, while skater Juan Carlos Candia from Cundinamarca also secured silver and bronze medals, contributing to the Colombian team’s positive overall results.
Colombia strengthens its presence in ice skating
The strong performance of Colombian skaters in Utah confirms the country’s progress in this discipline, which has traditionally been dominated by nations with long histories in winter sports. The adaptation process for athletes coming from roller skating has proven to be an effective strategy for competing on ice.
The work led by the Federacion Colombiana de Patinaje aims to build a solid base of athletes capable of representing the country in international competitions. Currently, dozens of Colombian skaters are undergoing training and adaptation processes on ice tracks.
The results achieved in the championship held in Utah not only represent an immediate sporting achievement but also strengthen Colombia’s long-term projection in ice speed skating.
