The alert over poisonings among young people following a viral acetaminophen challenge has raised concerns in Colombia, after health authorities confirmed cases linked to this dangerous practice spread on social media. The phenomenon, which involves the excessive consumption of this commonly used medication, has been classified as a public health threat due to the risks it poses, especially for minors.
According to the Ministry of Health, the National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima), and the National Institute of Health, the challenge consists of ingesting large amounts of acetaminophen to “endure” the effects of intoxication for as long as possible. This behavior, promoted on digital platforms, has raised concern among health experts, who warn about its potentially lethal consequences.
A viral challenge putting young people’s health at risk in Colombia
Authorities have pointed out that this type of digital challenge takes advantage of curiosity and social pressure among adolescents, who may underestimate the real effects of consuming medication without medical supervision. In this case, acetaminophen — known for relieving pain and fever — becomes dangerous when taken in doses higher than recommended.
The government has issued an urgent call to parents, teachers, and caregivers to strengthen supervision both online and at home. It has also urged special attention to minors’ access to over-the-counter medications, which, although common, are not free from serious adverse effects.
As part of the response, educational institutions have been encouraged to reinforce prevention and health education programs to inform young people about the risks associated with these practices.
Risks of excessive acetaminophen consumption
Excessive intake of acetaminophen can cause severe damage to the body, with the liver being the most affected organ. Specialists warn that an overdose can destroy liver cells, leading to acute liver failure—a condition that often requires a liver transplant to save the patient’s life.
One of the main dangers is that initial symptoms may be mild or go unnoticed, delaying timely medical attention. However, as the poisoning progresses, severe complications can develop, putting the person’s life at risk.
Even a single high-dose intake can be fatal, especially for adolescents or individuals with preexisting health conditions. For this reason, experts stress that no medication should be taken without medical guidance or in amounts exceeding recommended doses.
Prevention and a call for digital responsibility
In response to this situation, authorities have reiterated the importance of not replicating or sharing these types of challenges on social media. Prevention, they emphasize, begins with education and open dialogue between adults and young people about the risks of irresponsible medication use.
It is also recommended to keep medications out of reach of minors and to seek immediate medical attention if poisoning is suspected. Prompt care can make the difference between life and death in such cases.
