To the wide collection of musical tracks dedicated to the Colombian National Team, a new one has just been added that brings together, like in a football team, eleven stars of popular music. These are the most emblematic voices of that musical genre, called together by the renowned singer Jessi Uribe. 11 popular singers release song for the Colombian National Team.

Until now, the most representative songs released in honor of the national squad had tropical and vallenato origins. This time, popular music attempts to project its tribute to the tricolor and elevate it to the levels of recognition that other historic songs have achieved.

A cheerful song born from a sad genre

The new song, titled “Te Quiero Ver Campeon” (“I Want to See You Champion”), captures the airs of rural and urban culture, which has almost always been nourished by lyrics of heartbreak, love, betrayal, and liquor, with a sound influenced by rancheras, corridos, and boleros.

But this time it sounds festive, joyful, contagious, with the purpose of becoming the anthem of the National Team this year for the World Cup that will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

In fact, it is built on a cumbia rhythm, with a structure that seeks to connect with the chants of football fan groups in Colombia, explains the newspaper El Colombiano. That intention is reflected in the chorus: “Me subió la fiebre, pero por la tricolor / Póngale la fe que Colombia grita gol / 50 millones, pero solo un corazón / Dame una alegría que te quiero ver campeón” (“I got the fever, but for the tricolor / Keep the faith because Colombia shouts goal / 50 million, but only one heart / Give me some joy because I want to see you champion.”).

The track features Jessi Uribe, Pipe Bueno, Luis Alfonso, Jhon Alex Castaño, Alzate, Jhonny Rivera, Luisito Muñoz, Ciro Quiñonez, Arelys Henao, Francy, and Paola Jara. One notable aspect of this song is that, according to the creators themselves, it was funded by the artists without support from brands, federations, or official entities.

In the official video, recorded in popular neighborhoods of Medellin under the direction of the Saruma team, the eleven singers wear black jerseys with messages referencing Colombia. They all sing the song while dancing, drinking beer, and around the preparation of the popular sancocho, one of Colombia’s most beloved dishes.

Everything happens in common spaces of popular environments in the Antioquian capital, such as neighborhood stores and the indispensable symbols of football, specifically of the Colombian National Team.

“I intended to bring together the artists of Colombian popular music in a single song for our National Team,” said Uribe, cited by the Antioquian newspaper. “A song that not only sounded, but was felt. That represented the real country. When music is born from the real, it becomes something eternal.”

It also emerged that the creation process was marked by a tragic event. The singer Yeison Jiménez, who died in a plane accident on January 10, had been one of the first to join after hearing the proposal. His death caused the project to pause, but it has finally been released on digital platforms, just before the friendly match between Colombia and Croatia.

The song “Te Quiero Ver Campeon” has just under three months before the World Cup begins to position itself and achieve the goal it pursues. It is not an easy task, as in every edition of the World Cup, many groups and artists release songs to pay tribute to the Colombian National Team.
