The Colombia women’s national team drew 0-0 in the Conmebol Nations League tournament and did not manage to secure its spot in the Football World Cup of the category, which will be held in Brazil in 2027. The national team had arrived with momentum after defeating Venezuela 2-1 in Cali and Chile 2-0, but could not overcome Argentina.
With their draw against the Argentines, Colombia maintains an unbeaten run of six consecutive matches in the tournament: on matchday one they defeated Peru 4-1; on matchday two, Ecuador 2-1; on matchday three they drew 1-1 with Bolivia; on matchday four they had a bye, and returned to winning ways on matchday five, defeating Venezuela 2-1, before beating Chile 2-0 on matchday six.
The result against the Albiceleste did not allow the team coached by Angelo Marsiglia to resolve the leadership that was at stake at the top of the standings. The two teams were tied on points (13), but Argentina was leading due to a goal difference of +12, while the Colombian side had +7 in that category. Now both teams have 14 points with the same goal difference.
But the Colombia national team, with its performance this Saturday at the Ciudad de Lanus Nestor Diaz Perez stadium, in the south of Buenos Aires, also could not break another balance it held with the Argentines: the two teams have played a total of 17 matches, nine of which ended in draws, plus four wins for Argentina and four for Colombia.
It is worth highlighting that the team that took the field with Katherine Tapia, Carolina Arias, Daniela Arias, Jorelyn Carabali, Manuela Vanegas, Marcela Restrepo, Gabriela Rodriguez, Leicy Santos, Wendy Bonilla, Linda Caicedo and Maithe Lopez made a great effort because they played against a strong home side.
In the first fifteen minutes Colombia seemed to take control of the match, always building from the defensive zone. The team was gaining confidence. Argentina, meanwhile, did not get past the three-quarter line, although it looked more aggressive because it applied high pressure. Their advances failed against the Colombian defense. By the end of the first half, only one direct shot attempt from Argentina and one from Colombia were recorded.
For the second half, Gisela Robledo came on in place of Maithe Lopez and gave dynamism to the Colombian attack. That second period had as significant moments, in the 60th minute, three simultaneous substitutions by Argentina and a possible handball in their area that led to a six-minute VAR review. Sixteen fouls by Argentina compared to eight by Colombia also reflect how the match unfolded.”**
