Valledupar, Colombia, now has a new sovereign of the accordion. During the 59th edition of the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata, young accordionist Jose Juan Camilo Guerra Mendoza, artistically known as “El Morocho,” was crowned Vallenato King 2026 after an outstanding performance in the final round of the competition.
At just 25 years old, the vallenato musician secured the title after competing in several previous editions, consolidating a career that has been steadily rising within the genre. Currently, Guerra is part of the band of Colombian singer Silvestre Dangond, with whom he has performed on major stages since 2022.
How the final unfolded to choose the 2026 Vallenato King
During the decisive round, Guerra showcased his mastery of the accordion by accurately performing the four traditional vallenato styles: paseo, merengue, son, and puya. These categories form the core of the competition and require not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of folklore.
The so-called “four airs” are the foundation of traditional vallenato. Paseo is the most popular and narrative style; vallenato merengue has a more dynamic and festive rhythm; son is slower and more profound; while puya is the most technically demanding, characterized by its speed and complexity in accordion performance. Mastering these four styles is essential to aspire to the title of Vallenato King.
In his final performance, the new king played emblematic pieces such as Las chanzas de Mariela, by Gumercindo Peñaloza; El secreto, by Lorenzo Morales; Altos del Rosario, by Alejandro Durán Díaz; and Se va a saber quién es quién, by Reinaldo Ortiz.
He was accompanied on stage by Adelmo Alfonso Granados on the caja and Reinaldo Javier Ortiz on the guacharaca, delivering a solid performance that impressed both the judges and the audience.
The 2026 edition of the festival was also highly symbolic, paying tribute to the legendary Binomio de Oro de America and iconic figures such as Rafael Orozco and Israel Romero, key pillars in the history of vallenato music.
The meaning of being Vallenato King
The title of Vallenato King is one of the highest honors in Colombian traditional music. Since the creation of the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in 1968, this award has been given to the country’s most outstanding accordionists, becoming a key platform to boost their careers.
More than just a prize, the title represents the responsibility of preserving and promoting the values of authentic vallenato. Winners become part of the genre’s history and take on a leading role as cultural ambassadors of Colombia.
Over the decades, this title has been held by figures who are now legends of folklore, making each new coronation a moment of great significance for national music.
Other winners and the legacy of the festival
In addition to the new Vallenato King, the festival recognized other talents across different categories. In the unpublished song category, the winner was Fabian Leonardo Dangond Rosado, while Romario Andres Moron Bertel took the title in the amateur category.
In the female division, Sara Valentina Rhenals Escobar was crowned Queen, and in the traditional piqueria (improvised verse duels), the winner was Jaider David Daza Bolaño.
With this new edition, the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata reaffirms its importance as one of Colombia’s most significant cultural events. The crowning of Jose Juan Camilo Guerra not only celebrates individual talent but also strengthens the continuity of a tradition that remains a symbol of identity in the Caribbean region.
