The Colombian national team has finalized its preliminary roster for the 2026 World Cup. Head coach Nestor Lorenzo unveiled on Thursday the preliminary 55-man squad that will lead the team through the final stage of preparation for the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The roster confirmed the continuity of the core group that helped Colombia qualify for the tournament, featuring names such as James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz, Jhon Arias, and Jefferson Lerma, but it also included several surprises and some omissions that sparked debate among fans and analysts.
The final list will be trimmed in the coming weeks until it reaches the 26 players who will ultimately compete in the World Cup.
Colombia unveils its official 55-man squad for the 2026 World Cup
The preliminary roster keeps the core group of players who have been part of Nestor Lorenzo’s project since the start of the qualifiers. Veteran leaders such as James Rodriguez, David Ospina, Camilo Vargas, and Luis Diaz were included in the squad and are considered fundamental pieces within the team’s structure.
Players who recently established themselves as important options for the coaching staff were also included. Richard Rios, Daniel Muñoz, Kevin Mier, and Jhon Duran arrive backed by their performances in international soccer and are viewed as players with strong chances of making the final roster.
Lorenzo explained that the main objective was to maintain the group’s stability and preserve the competitive identity the national team has shown throughout his tenure. The Argentine coach insisted that the team heads into the World Cup with a solid foundation and players who already understand the tactical approach and collective system.
One of the most attention-grabbing aspects was the inclusion of players who had not recently appeared with the senior national team. Among them was Sebastian Villa, whose call-up immediately sparked debate across social media and sports media outlets.
The roster also made room for young players who have developed in international leagues, such as Yaser Asprilla, in addition to several players from Colombia’s domestic league who managed to catch the attention of the coaching staff thanks to their recent performances.
The presence of players from the local league was interpreted as a message from Lorenzo about the importance of maintaining constant monitoring of Colombian soccer, even in a context where much of the national team’s core plays abroad.
The omissions generating debate
As happens with every roster announcement ahead of a major tournament, several omissions generated controversy among fans and analysts. The absence of striker Roger Martinez was one of the most discussed decisions following the official announcement.
The forward publicly reacted to the decision and expressed his dissatisfaction, fueling debate over the criteria used by the coach to build the preliminary World Cup squad. On social media, there were also questions regarding other players who are currently performing well with their clubs but were left out of the call-up.
Despite the criticism, the roster reflects a clear direction from the coaching staff: prioritizing continuity in the process and keeping together the group that secured qualification for the World Cup after Colombia’s absence from 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The national team will begin the final stage of preparation in the coming days with a training camp in Medellin and Bogota before traveling to the United States for pre-World Cup friendlies.
The coaching staff hopes to use those matches to fine-tune physical and tactical details before defining the final 26-man roster. Lorenzo still has several decisions to make in defense, attack, and midfield, positions where multiple players are competing for a spot on the final squad.
Expectations surrounding the national team are high. Colombia will return to the World Cup with a generation that combines experience and youth, aiming to once again compete among the tournament’s leading national teams.
