Medellín continues to position itself as one of the region’s leading hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship. According to the Colombia Tech Report 2026, Medellín was recognized as the best destination in Latin America for technology business development, surpassing cities such as Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City.
The study highlights the rapid growth of Medellín’s technology ecosystem, which currently concentrates more than 30% of Colombia’s active startups and has attracted nearly USD $157 million in investment over the past year. This figure represents a significant increase compared to previous years and consolidates the city as one of Latin America’s main innovation centers.
The recognition also coincides with Medellín’s rise in the global StartupBlink index, where it ranks 130th among more than 1,500 cities evaluated for innovation capacity, business development, and technological competitiveness.
Medellín leads innovation and tech entrepreneurship in Latin America
One of the key factors behind Medellín’s technological growth has been the consolidation of a collaborative ecosystem involving the public sector, academia, and private companies. Within this landscape, Ruta N has played a fundamental role in coordinating projects focused on innovation, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship.
Currently, the city is home to nearly 700 active technology-based companies, strengthened through programs such as Ruta del Emprendimiento 2026, an initiative that supports startups from the ideation stage to international expansion.
The program offers seed capital of up to 15 million Colombian pesos for early-stage ventures, specialized mentorships, and training opportunities in areas such as scalability, finance, and internationalization. During 2025, the strategy benefited more than 650 companies, while in 2026, it expanded its reach to support 700 technological initiatives.
Another notable project isMedellín Next 2026, led by Ruta N, which selected 48 startups from more than 140 applications to receive strategic support and specialized training. The participating companies belong to sectors such as energy, fintech, healthcare, education, and agribusiness, areas considered essential for the city’s economic diversification.
Medellín surpasses other technological capitals in the region
The Colombia Tech Report 2026 states that Medellin managed to rank above other Latin American cities thanks to its ability to attract investment, develop specialized talent, and strengthen digital infrastructure.
While Medellín reported investments close to USD $157 million and around 700 active startups, Santiago de Chile recorded USD $120 million and nearly 500 technology companies. Meanwhile, Buenos Aires reached USD $110 million, and Mexico City reported USD $100 million in raised capital.
Beyond investment, another determining factor has been the strengthening of local talent. Universities, research centers, and technology training programs have helped create a solid base of professionals specialized in artificial intelligence, software development, data analysis, and digital transformation.
Companies such as Ubits, La Haus, Frubana, and Rappi have strengthened their operations in Medellin, while new emerging companies are beginning to gain international visibility in areas related to artificial intelligence and logistics solutions.
