Valledupar is getting ready to celebrate one of its most important cultural events: The 59th edition of the Festival of the Vallenato Legend, which will take place from April 29 to May 2, 2026, at the renowned Parque de la Leyenda Vallenata “Consuelo Araujonoguera.” This year, the festival pays special tribute to three essential figures of romantic vallenato: Israel Romero, Rafael Orozco, and the legendary Binomio de Oro de America, a group that shaped the Caribbean music scene for decades.
As one of its major announcements, the organization revealed that alternative activities will be held in Bogota to extend the celebration to those who cannot travel to Valledupar. With more than 800 accordion players registered across all categories and the participation of national and international artists, this edition promises to be one of the most attended in recent years.
History and origin of the Vallenato Festival
The Festival of the Vallenato Legend was created in 1968 as an initiative to preserve the roots of traditional vallenato and promote the juglares of the Colombian Caribbean. It was founded by Consuelo Araujonoguera, Rafael Escalona, and Alfonso Lopez Michelsen, who sought to rescue the oral stories transmitted through the accordion, caja, and guacharaca.
Over time, the festival has become the most influential folkloric event in Colombia and an international reference point for lovers of the genre. Today, being crowned Vallenato King is one of the highest honors for an accordionist, and the festival remains the stage where tradition, talent, and cultural memory converge.

From April 27 to 29, contestants in the children’s, youth, and amateur categories will compete in their respective elimination rounds, while composers present their works in the Inédita Vallenato Song competition. During these days, talks and academic activities will also take place, focusing on the evolution of vallenato and its cultural impact.
On Thursday, April 30, the semifinals of the Professional Vallenato King competition will be held, along with folkloric presentations at various venues across the city.
The festival gains greater momentum on Friday, May 1, with the grand official opening concert. The confirmed artists for this show are Silvestre Dangond, who arrives with his tour “El Ultimo Baile,” and J Balvin. That same night, the central tribute to Binomio de Oro de America will take place.
The closing ceremony will be on Saturday, May 2, when the final of the Professional Vallenato King competition will be held, culminating in the coronation of the new monarch of the accordion. The night will end with a concert featuring vallenato artists and musical acts that fuse tropical rhythms with contemporary sounds.
Recommendations for enjoying the festival without setbacks
With thousands of visitors arriving from across the country and abroad, Valledupar becomes a vibrant — but also highly crowded — city during the Vallenato Festival. For this reason, local authorities and event organizers recommend that travelers book hotels, transportation, and tourist packages several days — or even weeks — in advance, as hotel occupancy often reaches 100% during the festival’s peak days.
The weather is another key factor. Valledupar is known for its high temperatures, ranging from 33°C to 38°C, especially during the festival season. For this reason, it is essential to stay well hydrated, use sunscreen, wear light clothing and a hat, and avoid long exposure to the sun during the parades and folkloric presentations held outdoors.
Authorities also advise tourists to plan their transportation, as traffic increases significantly due to road closures and the influx of visitors. Choosing authorized transportation, certified taxis, or app-based services ensures greater safety and prevents irregular charges.
Visitors are also encouraged to carry moderate amounts of cash, keep personal belongings secure, and follow the instructions provided by organizers inside Parque de la Leyenda Vallenata.
