Colombia, a country renowned for its biodiversity and cultural richness, has seen a growing interest in rural tourism in recent years. This alternative to traditional tourism allows travelers to immerse themselves in the life of rural communities, enjoy unique landscapes and discover authentic traditions, all while promoting sustainable development in remote regions.

Where to experience rural tourism in Colombia?

Colombia’s diverse geography, which includes mountains, valleys, plains and jungles, offers countless options for rural tourism. Regions such as the Eje Cafetero, the Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales), the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and Jardin in Antioquia provide experiences that go beyond conventional tourism. Each destination has its own charm, ranging from exploring the coffee-making process on coffee farms to horseback riding across savannas with Llanero cowboys or living with Indigenous communities in the Amazon jungle.

Eje Cafetero

In the Eje Cafetero, visitors can stay at traditional coffee farms that offer much more than just accommodation. These farms allow travelers to dive into coffee culture through tours of the plantations, where they can learn about the coffee cultivation and production process. All of this is accompanied by the breathtaking mountainous landscapes characteristic of the region.

Regarding costs, during the low season, nightly rental prices range from COP 650,000 to COP 1,000,000, depending on the services included. Some farms also charge per person, with rates averaging COP 60,000 per night.

Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales)

The Eastern Plains stand out for their natural beauty and the diverse species that inhabit their vast landscapes. In terms of rural tourism, the region offers farms with comprehensive experiences, including swimming pools, jacuzzis, sports courts and educational tours like the popular bee tour. Many of these farms can accommodate up to 25 guests. Nightly rates start at COP 1,400,000, varying by season.

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a highly appealing destination for those looking to disconnect from their routines. This region combines mountain landscapes with paradisaical beaches, offering a unique blend for rural tourism.

  • Tierra Adentro Nature Reserve (Minca, Magdalena): Situated 24 km from Santa Marta, this reserve is ideal for those who enjoy hiking and the tranquility of nature. In addition to accommodations with mountain views, visitors can explore waterfalls and participate in outdoor activities that foster a connection with the natural environment.

Jardin, Antioquia

Jardin, Antioquia, recently recognized by UNWTO as the Best Village for Rural Tourism in Colombia for 2024, has captured tourists’ attention with its unique charm. Rural farms in this region offer activities designed to connect visitors with nature and local traditions.

  • Bee Tour: One of Jardin’s most popular activities is a tour of an authentic farm surrounded by geraniums, dahlias, orchids and bridal wreaths. During the tour, visitors learn about honey production, the history of bees and their vital role in the ecosystem.
