Capurgana and Sapzurro are two hidden gems in Colombia’s Choco Department, located near the border with Panama. Though still relatively unknown, these destinations have much to offer visitors. Their white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation make them an ideal refuge for nature lovers and those seeking peace and tranquility. These islands can be reached by plane or boat.

Colombia’s Sapzurro and Capurgana: destinations to connect with nature

Sapzurro and Capurgana are renowned in Colombia for their biodiversity and dreamlike landscapes. Surrounded by the Darien jungle, one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, these locations are perfect for activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and diving.

Sapzurro, with its natural bay and stunning turquoise waters, is ideal for those seeking tranquility and isolation. Playa de La Miel, a short 20-minute walk from the village, is an iconic spot where visitors can cross into Panama without passing through an official border checkpoint.

Capurgana, on the other hand, is slightly livelier, with more developed tourist infrastructure. From its port, visitors can arrange boat excursions to nearby sites such as El Cielo Waterfall, a perfect spot for relaxing in natural pools surrounded by jungle. Additionally, beaches such as Aguacate and Soledad offer idyllic settings for relaxation or snorkeling.

Culture and culinary experiences

In addition to their natural beauty, Capurgana and Sapzurro stand out for their hospitality and local culture. The population, mainly composed of Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities, has preserved authentic traditions that enrich visitors’ experiences.

Local cuisine combines fresh seafood with the distinctive flavors of Colombia’s Pacific region. Must-try dishes include coconut milk fish, patacones (fried green plantains), and coconut rice, making every meal an unforgettable experience.

In both destinations, the absence of motorized vehicles contributes to a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. Transportation is by foot, by bicycle, or in small boats, emphasizing the ecological character of the area.

How to get there and best time to visit

Most travelers start their journey by taking a flight from Medellin to the municipalities of Acandi or Turbo, in the Uraba Gulf. From there, the trip continues by boat to Capurgana. Another option is to travel by land to Turbo and then board a boat to Capurgana and Sapzurro. While the journey may be long, the unique landscapes and experiences make every minute worthwhile.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, between December and April, when the weather is more stable, and outdoor activities can be enjoyed to the fullest. However, those seeking a more intimate and less crowded experience will find that the off-season months also have their own charm.
