Located in the eastern part of Colombia’s Antioquia department, the town of San Rafael has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for those looking to escape the noise of the city and connect with nature. Just three hours from Medellín, this mountainous town captivates visitors with its crystal-clear waters, lush vegetation, and the warmth of its people.
Founded in 1864, San Rafael began as a mining settlement but gradually transformed into an agricultural hub, known for its production of sugarcane, coffee, and citrus fruits. Today, its main attraction lies not only in its history but also in its rivers and natural pools, making it one of the most important ecotourism destinations in the region.
The natural pools of San Rafael: a hidden gem in Colombia
San Rafael is known as the “Enchantment of Crystal Waters,” and rightly so: it boasts more than 90 natural pools, waterfalls, and waterholes, perfect for swimming, relaxing, or simply admiring the natural beauty. One of the most visited is Charco El Trocadero, with turquoise waters surrounded by giant rocks. Another must-see is Charco La Peña, where adventurous visitors dive from the rocks into the water.
In addition, this Antioquian town is crossed by several rivers, including the Guatape River and the San Rafael River, whose cold but clean waters are ideal for tubing, eco-hiking, or enjoying a family picnic.
If you’re a fan of ecotourism, this place is perfect for you. Activities such as hiking, birdwatching, mountain biking, and visiting hidden waterfalls like La Samaria or La Planta are also available. Many travelers even combine their trip with a visit to San Carlos or Guatape, nearby towns with breathtaking scenic routes.

The River Festival in San Rafael
One of the most anticipated events of the year in San Rafael is the River Festival (Fiestas del Rio), usually held in January. This celebration pays tribute to the rivers that surround the town and to the area’s natural wealth. For several days, the town is filled with music, traditional dances, parades, local cuisine, beauty pageants, and water sports.
One of the most striking events is the horseback ride along the riverbank, where both locals and tourists rent horses and ride along the river. In the evenings, the town comes alive with live music performances from local and national artists.
These festivities not only promote tourism but also strengthen the sense of belonging and cultural identity of the people of San Rafael.
