In the department of Boyaca, Colombia, lies Paya, a little known town that preserves some of the most stunning landscapes of the Andean region. Surrounded by mountains and forests, Paya has become a haven for those seeking to disconnect from routine and reconnect with nature through its streams, rivers, and crystal-clear waterfalls.

Unlike other tourist municipalities in Boyaca, such as Villa de Leyva or Paipa, Paya maintains a quieter charm, ideal for travelers who want to enjoy authentic experiences without crowds. Its waterfalls, many still unexplored by mass tourism, are the main jewels that invite adventurers and ecotourism enthusiasts to discover this corner of eastern Boyaca.

The main attraction of Paya lies in its waterfalls and streams of clean water descending from the mountains.

One of the most captivating treasures of Paya is Quebrada La Corozo, located in the Tutaza village. This natural spot, perfect for relaxation, can be reached by motorcycle up to a certain point and then on foot through forests, bird songs, and fresh air. Upon arrival, visitors are rewarded with crystal clear waters flowing between rocks surrounded by lush vegetation. This peaceful journey becomes an experience of complete disconnection, where the serenity of the landscape invites renewal.

Another must-see for ecotourism lovers is the Morcote hot springs, located approximately an hour from the central town of Morcote. Access is via footpaths immersed in rich biodiversity, surrounded by mountainous landscapes, native vegetation, and panoramic views that heighten the sensory experience.

Paya also offers other natural spaces of great ecological and cultural value. The Tibayoque Lagoons, located in the Bocademonte village, are water mirrors framed by mountains and forests, accessible through ecological walks ideal for hiking, birdwatching, and quiet contemplation. Other water currents, such as the Agua Blanca and La Chorrera streams, also contribute to the hydric richness of the municipality, providing perfect spots for relaxation and connection with nature.

Paya and its historical legacy

Beyond its natural landscapes, Paya holds deep historical significance. The town is part of the province of La Libertad, a region of Boyaca whose name is no coincidence: it commemorates the events that took place there during Colombia’s independence movement. This territory was the scene of crucial battles that marked the country’s path toward emancipation.

In 1819, Paya became a key protagonist with the Battle of the Thermopylae of Paya, one of the first victories of the Liberation Army during the Liberation Campaign led by Simon Bolivar. In this confrontation, the patriot troops resisted and defeated the royalist forces amid the difficult mountain geography; a triumph that strengthened the morale of the fighters and paved the way toward definitive independence.

Today, walking the trails and mountains of Paya not only allows visitors to enjoy its waterfalls and streams but also to tread on soil steeped in memory. Every corner of the town recalls the spirit of resistance and courage that defined the region. Visiting Paya, therefore, is also a journey into the past, an opportunity to connect with national history in the very place where decisive chapters of freedom were written.
