Cadillac will officially return to Colombia after 32 years of absence, doing so with a strategy focused exclusively on luxury electric vehicles. The announcement was made by representatives of General Motors during an event in Sao Paulo, where they confirmed that the historic American brand will return to the country through GM Colmotores.
The company will enter the Colombian market with three premium electric models: Cadillac Celestiq, Cadillac Lyriq and Cadillac Optiq, as part of a strategy aimed at repositioning Cadillac within the high-end segment and competing with European and Asian brands that have gained ground in electric mobility.
The decision also reflects General Motors’ interest in strengthening its presence in Latin America amid the global transformation of the automotive industry.
Iconic American car brand returns to Colombia after 32 years
The return of Cadillac carries strong symbolic weight for the Colombian automotive industry. The brand officially left the country more than three decades ago after having a presence with some of its most recognized luxury sedans during the late 20th century. Since then, Cadillac vehicles circulating in Colombia arrived only through private imports and not through official representation.
Now, the American company seeks to return under a completely different approach. Instead of large-displacement combustion engines, the company will focus exclusively on high-end electric vehicles, aligned with the global transformation underway in the automotive industry and with General Motors’ international electrification strategy.
The decision also coincides with the strengthening of Cadillac as a global brand. In recent years, the company has expanded into new markets and increased its international presence through technological and sporting projects, including its arrival in Formula One World Championship as a new team for the 2026 season.
Cadillac’s return will take place under the operation of GM Colmotores, a historic company in Colombia’s automotive sector and General Motors’ subsidiary in the country. The company will be responsible for commercializing the vehicles, developing the service network and repositioning the brand among Colombian luxury consumers.
Although there is still no exact date for the start of sales, the company confirmed that the official launch will take place this year. The strategy includes a fully electric portfolio, reflecting the profound transformation taking place in the global premium market.
Cadillac’s arrival is also being interpreted as a sign of confidence in the growth of electric mobility in Colombia. In recent years, the country has recorded sustained growth in hybrid and electric vehicle sales, driven by tax incentives, environmental restrictions in major cities and a broader offering from international brands.
In that context, Cadillac will seek to compete directly with traditional luxury manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo, but also with newer electric brands that have gained ground in the country, including Tesla, Zeekr and Xpeng.
The electric models arriving in Colombia
Cadillac confirmed that its new phase in Colombia will initially focus on three electric models developed on General Motors’ BEV3 platform: Cadillac Celestiq, Cadillac Lyriq and Cadillac Optiq.
One of the most striking vehicles will be the Cadillac Celestiq, a luxury fastback sedan manufactured in the United States and considered the most exclusive model of the brand’s new electric generation. The car features two electric motors capable of producing about 655 horsepower and an estimated range of 488 kilometers. It can also accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in less than four seconds, positioning itself as one of the company’s most advanced models.
The company will also bring the Cadillac Lyriq, an SUV that became the brand’s first fully electric vehicle developed for the global market. The model will be available in rear-wheel-drive versions as well as configurations with dual motors and all-wheel drive. The SUV has been presented by Cadillac as a key element of its technological and design transformation.
The third confirmed model is the Cadillac Optiq, a compact electric SUV aimed at a younger audience within the premium segment. The vehicle will seek to compete with luxury electric SUVs that are currently gaining ground in cities such as Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. According to versions already known in Brazil and other markets, the model aims to combine high performance, connectivity and futuristic design.
The return of Cadillac represents much more than the arrival of a traditional brand. It also reflects how the Colombian market has begun transforming toward high-end electric mobility, a segment that seemed far from reality for the country only a few years ago.
General Motors’ strategy aims to recover Cadillac’s historic prestige, but adapted to the new demands of modern consumers: sustainability, technology, connectivity and exclusivity. The brand will no longer return with the large gasoline-powered sedans that defined an era, but with a lineup of electric vehicles designed to compete in the future of automotive luxury.
