Barranquilla has achieved the Gold level in the LEED for Cities certification, one of the world’s most important standards in urban sustainability and environmental development. With this achievement, the city becomes one of the few in Latin America to receive this distinction and the first in Colombia’s Caribbean region to reach this level.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is considered the most recognized sustainability evaluation system worldwide. In the case of LEED for Cities, the program evaluates indicators related to air quality, sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, water use, waste management, climate resilience, public spaces, and quality of life.

The recognition places Barranquilla on the global map of sustainable cities, a factor that could strengthen the arrival of foreign investment, international cooperation, and projects focused on environmental innovation and urban development.

Mayor Alejandro Char highlighted the significance of the recognition and stated that the city continues to advance toward more sustainable and resilient urban models in response to current environmental challenges.

Barranquilla’s environmental projects that drove the LEED Gold for Cities recognition

The achievement of the LEED Gold certification was made possible thanks to several projects developed in recent years focused on environmental recovery, clean mobility, and urban modernization in Barranquilla.

One of the most important projects has been the restoration of the Cienaga de Mallorquin, a strategic environmental area where mangrove and coastal ecosystem restoration initiatives have been carried out. The area also incorporated an ecopark aimed at sustainable tourism and environmental education.

Another key space has been the Gran Malecon del Rio, an urban waterfront corridor stretching more than five kilometers that reconnected the city with the Magdalena River and promoted new forms of pedestrian, cycling, and recreational mobility.

The city has also advanced initiatives related to sustainable transportation through the incorporation of electric and hybrid buses, the expansion of bike lanes, and the strengthening of public bicycle systems. These measures aim to reduce polluting emissions and improve urban mobility.

In the energy sector, Barranquilla implemented efficiency projects in public buildings through solar panels and LED street lighting modernization, while waste management initiatives promoted community recycling programs and biogas capture at landfills.

Barranquilla strengthens its international image as a modern city

Beyond its environmental impact, the LEED Gold certification represents a strategic opportunity for Barranquilla’s international positioning as a modern city prepared to attract major events, sustainable tourism, and green investments.

This type of recognition increases the confidence of international organizations and financial institutions interested in supporting projects related to clean energy, green infrastructure, and climate resilience.

The distinction also improves perceptions of quality of life and strengthens long-term urban planning, especially in a region vulnerable to climate change-related phenomena such as flooding and rising sea levels.

Barranquilla now joins other internationally recognized cities for their environmental policies, such as Chicago and Washington D.C., consolidating an urban transformation that seeks to balance economic growth, sustainability, and citizens’ well-being.
